Her surname was changed legally aged 15 and chose her preferred name "Portia" after the Shakespearean character of 'The Merchant of Venice.' Portia believes it's the most daring decision she's made. It was said by her that an inner struggle over her sexuality was what prompted her to take the leap. Her career in the film industry began with the romantic drama film 'Sirens. She was in the film with Hugh Grant. The actress also appeared on several American films and television shows such as Too Something, Nick Freno, Licensed Teacher, Arrested Development, as well as, Better Off Ted. She became famous for her role as a lawyer from Boston, who was named Nelle Porter, in a television comedy show called Ally McBeal. Her character was the main comedy relief.
